The human condition is one of pursuit, isn’t it? We pine after more, and better, and all that glitters only to come up exhausted and disappointed. Our scripture verse is pretty clear. It tells us that whatever we seek in life will capture our heart and drive our devotion.

I don’t know about you, but that thought is arresting. It causes me to take a step back and question how I’m spending my time. Truth is, most of us wrestle with treasures that shamelessly compete for our time, resources, and attention.

Take a moment to do a quick inventory by asking yourself—What holds the key to my heart?

If you have accepted this challenge as I have, you might find that the intentions of your heart are bent toward self-promotion and self-gratification. 

Perhaps it’s a drive to attain health or wealth. Acknowledgment or perfection. Stability. Security. Identity. Whatever your ‘it’ is, rest assured God has something better!

Yet, the only way to experience this type of ‘better’ is to go beyond self to a higher plane of purpose. One in which our treasure is found in Him and not just the immediate desires competing for our attention and devotion.

For some, this process of identifying our motivations will be a deep-dive into how we were brought up and what was important to those who reared us. For others, this might be a shallow dive into current relationships or circumstances that influence how we see life and what we are driven to prove, acquire, or accomplish.

With that in mind, take a few thoughtful moments and invite the Holy Spirit to reveal any truths you need to know because it is His truth that sets us free (John 8:32). And when we are free, we can realign to what’s important and what will last.

Regardless of where you find yourself on this journey of the heart, practice compassion with yourself and seek God’s direction. Human insight will only carry us so far. The key to finding true and lasting treasure is found where our humanness intersects with our faith.

This point of collision takes us beyond the proclivities that stagnate in selfishness, jealousy, and insecurity into the realm of quiet confidence in our creator. It’s not who we are. It’s who He is.

He is our hope.

He is our peace.

He is our treasure.

The treasures of this world will fade away but not the treasures of heaven (Matthew 6:20). They are the intangible jewels of sacrifice, love, and an honest commitment to faith. Maybe it’s time to discover the precious beauty of His presence where wisdom sparkles like a rare diamond, and peace shimmers like pure gold.
